Colt Express Review

It’s 1899 and the pacific Express is headed north to deliver its payroll and forty-seven passengers. When suddenly the train is attacked by a host of thieving bandits aiming to become the richest outlaw of the Old West!

Well I hope that caught your attention as it sure did ours. We are lucky enough to be part of the Blogger Board Game Club and was sent this fab game to get our thoughts. You may have seen from past post that’s we love a bit of gaming in our house, we were so excited when this arrived.

There is a bit of setting up of this game, you have to put together the trains. Once I had put the first train together and knew what I had to do I found it quite fun, I even filmed a time-lapse so you can see it, just click play on the video below.

Game play

The aim of the game is to move your bandit looting, shooting and punching other players to score the most loot.

It’s a family game for 2 to 6 players and the game lasts around 30 to 40 minutes long depending how many player you have. Played over 5 rounds and it’s divided into two phases, Phase one – schemin and Phase 2 –  stealin.

Phase one – In each round you take turns playing an action card in to a pile. This is where you have to carefully plan your action if you hope to win (or just like me wing it), there are some twists as sometimes information can be hidden from you like when the train goes through a tunnel and players place their cards face down so no one else can see.

Phase two –  When all players have played their cards the player who went first reveals the cards and each player moves their bandit around the train. This is the fun part and if your like me forget what actions you played and end up shooting bullets into thin air or punching a player who was there but then they have moved and you punching no one.  All while trying to avoid that darn Marshall, who loves to shoot bullets at you.

Heres a little video of us playing, I speed it up a bit which I thought was quite fun.

This is a great family game, the rules are simple and the game play is very entertaining, you can take on the role of your character and role play. The Mr enjoyed taking on the role of Belle the most beautiful lady from the South. You can story tell and create a background for your character while playing. No one seemed to get bored waiting for their turn.  The game looks great and I love the Train being 3D, I think its also a good price at £27.99.

We would recommend Colt express to others it’s a great alternative to more traditional board games such as Monopoly. It took us, and especially the kids, away from our technology and brought us together as a family!
